SL15B: Once On a Blue Moon – Our Past, Our Present, Our Aspirations

Starting TODAY, June 17, at 12 noon SLT, the SL15B CRYSTAL BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION begins for a week!

We at Whole Brain Health have created an exciting exhibit for the SL 15th Birthday celebration.  The official name of the exhibit is “Whole Brain Health – Reflections on Our Evolution“, but to pay homage to our origins on the Blue Moon sim, we have given it the tagline “Once On a Blue Moon.”

We used the crystal theme throughout our build.  The exhibit has a foundation of five colored crystals, which represent the five pillars of whole brain health:  Self-care, Cognitive, Creativity, Social, and Purpose.  On the first level, Origins, we remember those who have partnered with us and influenced our development.  The second level, Programs, highlights what we currently are doing.  The top level, Aspirations, focuses on where we want to go in the future.

Please join in the celebration, and come visit us at the Whole Brain Health exhibit.

Premiere of Drax Files movie, “Our Digital Selves: My Avatar is me!”

Monday, May 21 marked the debut of the feature film “Our Digital Selves: My Avatar is me!”, created by Bernhard Drax. The grand opening was at the Accessibility Park Broadway Theater in Second Life, and the event was coordinated in SL by Krijon (Shyla the Super Gecko).

(see link below for full movie)

“Our Digital Selves: My Avatar is me!” tells the story of 13 global citizens and their avatars as they transcend their various disabilities through artistic expression and making a home in the VR Metaverse.

Filmmaker Bernhard Drax travels from California to rural South England to explore why a diverse group of people ranging from 24 to 92 years of age find solace, inspiration and deep friendship in a user-created digital wonderland that only exists inside their computers.

Drax sends his intrepid documentarian avatar Draxtor Despres into the virtual universes of Second Life as well as next generation VR platforms like High Fidelity and Sansar and – among many other adventures – he finds out why a 50-something Chicagoan feels best represented by a colorful gecko complete with superhero cape or why Cody LaScala – confined to a wheelchair his entire life – feels his avatar should look exactly like him.

The film follows researchers Tom Boellstorff and Donna Davis as they lead discussion groups and facilitate deep connections between real human beings in virtuality. We follow along as they travel to Silicon Valley to find out how the leading technologists design the future with disability in mind.

As Boellstorff and Davis finish up their 3-year study made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation [entitled “Virtual Worlds, Disability and New Cultures of the Embodied Self”], the film comes as a compressed compendium and visual guide to a seemingly unlimited array of possibilities for borderless human interaction.

Unique in its narrative approach, “Our Digital Selves” weaves together physical and virtual cinematography as the protagonists’ backstories are re-enacted via Machinima technique – real time animation – in the virtual world and in next generation VR platforms.

Grand Opening weekend for Curei’s Floating Gallery – Feb 24-25, from 8am-4pm SLT

It’s a wondrous adventure for your eyes, featuring the panoramic photo work of the photojournalist “Curei” (pronounced: CURE-ee-eye), and with special guest exhibitors from time to time as well.

We hope that you will enjoy our Central Plaza area, the little model sail boats, the lovely Meditation Alcove, our magnificent one-of-a-kind spiral fountain, our strolling peacocks, the great Little Jazz Corner, and the relaxing music stream on the rest of this “floater.” And who knows what else you might discover.

And, speaking of discovering something, a mysterious object has been hidden somewhere on this “floater.” It is an interesting surprise. Can you find it? Hint: It is a thing and it has but one moving part. If you find it, please don’t tell anyone what it is and don’t tell them where they can find it. Let them explore and find it for themselves.

This is a place to renew one’s soul. This is a place for your relaxation and enjoyment. This is a place to return to as often as you wish.

And below this little floating paradise, you will find an exceptionally interesting place,…. the main Inspiration Island. It is a place to learn and to discover. You will find a special Transportation Globe in the landing area of this floating gallery that will take you there.

Curei would also like to thank so many without whom this creation would not have been possible. To start with, Pluto Fairey gifted the basic “floater” as a beginning, and it was most certainly a wonderful place to start.  Then Wisdomseeker, the founder and director of the entire Inspiration Island sim, and the rest of the wonderful leadership of the island, gave us this very special home in their sky.
